Although some observers may think of abstract painting as artwork that
can be created by anyone, anytime, or as something that can be created
with ease, or as an endeavour that is meaningless, or as something that
is strictly for “intellectuals”, the fact is, committed artists
who work in an abstract manner, work with themes, or with specific
intentions, or with visions for their work. Intuition and
experimentation combine with planning and strong basic art skills to
propel the abstract artist towards an unknown emotional completeness,
much like a dancer, through movement, shifts between pure inspiration
and logical skill to tell an emotional story.
Attempting to achieve this balance artistically, I recently returned to
oil paint. Mixing the oil paint with small amounts of cold wax
(bee’s wax), I apply the paint to either wood or canvas surfaces with a
variety of tools. Often as many as two dozen layers are applied
by the time the artwork is complete. In between layers, many
changes occur. Colour and texture are two of my favourite tools
for expressing ideas. The layers become translucent, and
underlying layers of colour subtly appear. Various tools are used
for mark-making, until the piece reaches a certain point when I sense
it is complete.
Recent work is often signed au verso, rather than on the front.
My wish is not to interfere with the imagery in the artwork.
